Sand Lake, the shinning pearl on the fortress, is situated in Pingluo county, at the north 42 kilometers to Yinchuan, the capitalcity of Ningxia Hui Autonomouts Region. It is 50 kilometers awayfrom the Hedong Airport. Number 109 state highway and Baotou-Lanzhou railway go accross the edge of the Sand Lake. The Sand Lake is also connected with the espressway of Shizuishan-Zhongwei.  The  total  area  of the  Sand  Lake  is  80.10  squarekilometres of which the lake is 45 square kilometres with  averagedepth 2.2 metres; desert 13 square kilomtres; swamp 12 squarekilometres. The scenery  of  Sand Lake which  is regared as the shining pearl on the fortress is a combination of southern waterland and desert. For the time being, the attraction of the Sand Lake has become hot spot both for tourism and investment in the north west of China. The natural scenery of the Sand Lake is composed of lake, sand hills, reed marshes, lotus, background mountains and bird and fish observation.

    Beautiful tourist spots surround the Sand Lake. South to it,there are so called eastern style pyramid-kings' tombs of Western Summer Dynasty in Ancienyt China, Huaxia West Film City and Huaxia Art City; west to it, there are Bell Rolling Pass in MountHelan, Baisikou Twin Pagodas, rock paintings in Mount Helan and some other ancient rlics.
